About this tour

This itinerary includes Qinghai and Gansu, two historically important regions on the ancient Silk Road. Qinghai is famous for its high-altitude lakes, grasslands, and exotic ethnic cultures, while Gansu is characterized by its Gobi landscape, Danxia landform, Buddhist grottoes, and Great Wall culture.

Starting from Xining, we will go to the dreamy Qinghai Lake and Chaka Salt Lake, and then to Zhangye with its unique Danxia red sandstone landform. The journey ends in the mysterious city of Dunhuang, where you will enjoy the spectacular desert landscape and experience the unique culture of the ancient Silk Road.

  • Marvel at the magnificent landscapes of two high-altitude lakes, tour Qinghai Lake, voted “China's Most Beautiful Lake” by National Geographic China, and be amazed by the surrounding stunning scenery. Also, take a train ride through the "Mirror of the Sky" – Chaka Salt Lake.
  • Trace the roots of China's splendid Buddhist culture on the ancient Silk Road, admiring the exquisite architecture of the famous Ta'er Monastery in Xining and the Giant Buddha Temple in Zhangye. Marvel at the astonishing murals, sculptures, and grottoes in the mystical Mogao Caves.
  • Witness the magnificent landscapes of wild China, explore the renowned Zhangye Danxia National Geopark, take fabulous photos of the Rainbow Mountains. Admire the majestic desert landscapes of the Echoing-Sand Mountain, Crescent Lake, and the Devil City - Yadan National Geological Park.

Chaka Salt Lake – Crossing the Qaidam Basin – Chaerhan Salt Lake – Golmud/Daxiadan

Golmud/Daxiadan – Water Yadan – U-shaped road (passing by) – Daxiadan

Da Qaidam - Da Qaidam Emerald Lake - Oil Town - Dunhuang

Dunhuang – Mogao Grottoes – Crescent Moon Lake in Mingsha Mountain – Dunhuang

Dunhuang - Jiayuguan - Zhangye Colorful Danxia - Zhangye

 Zhangye – Qilian Grassland – Menyuan – Disband in Xining.Depart Xining, hotel check-out before 12:00, and airport see-off. Safe journey home.

Perfectly Organized Tour of Qinghai Lake, Zhangye, and Dunhuang
