As of June 22, 2023, regarding compensation arrangements by the Chinese diplomatic missions in the USA for 10-year multiple-entry visas temporarily rendered non-functional due to the pandemic:

  1. U.S. citizens holding multi-year, multiple-entry visas issued before March 28, 2020, under bilateral agreements, which lost entry functionality from March 28, 2020, to March 14, 2023, due to the pandemic, may apply for compensation.

  2. Those who received a new multi-year, multiple-entry visa or a domestic residence permit after March 28, 2020, are not eligible for compensation for the original visa.

  3. Visa holders may choose to apply for compensation after their visa expires. Opting for compensation, the consulate will issue a 3-year multiple-entry visa free of charge. If declined, a new 10-year multiple-entry visa can be issued at the standard fee.

  4. The compensation visa application follows the normal visa process and requirements.

  5. To facilitate this, Chinese missions in the USA will no longer accept applications for similar visas with over six months of validity remaining. Applicants may choose to seek compensation after their current visa expires.

Train.

Between two locations without a direct route, tickets can be purchased through the 12306 APP, with transfer stations including Huaihua South, Chongqing North, Shapingba, and Wulong (for slower trains). Fast trains starting with G or D take about 7-10 hours in total (including transfer time), while slower trains starting with K take over 24 hours.

Air.

Between two locations without a direct flight, it is not recommended to transfer through Shanghai or Shandong due to time and cost inefficiency. If you must choose air travel, there is a flight from Chengdu to Changde Taohuayuan Airport. Upon arrival, you can transfer to a high-speed train from Changde to Zhangjiajie, which takes about an hour.

Train.

For train travel between two locations, only slow trains starting with K provide direct service, with a journey time of 6.5 hours. The comfort and onboard environment of K trains are relatively poor. Tickets can be purchased through the 12306 APP. It’s recommended to take fast trains starting with G or D for a transfer at Huaihua South, with a total travel time of under 7 hours (including transfer time). Other transfer options involving G, D, and K trains are not recommended.

Air.

For air travel, there are currently no convenient options available, and it is not recommended.

whether between cities, from cities to attractions, or from one attraction to another, mainly involves flights, high-speed trains, and private car hires for distances within 200KM. Thanks to China’s advanced high-speed rail system, we highly recommend choosing high-speed trains for most journeys.

For example, if you’re traveling from Chongqing, Wuhan, or Chengdu to Zhangjiajie, or from Jiuzhaigou to Zhangjiajie, the preferred method is the fast and comfortable high-speed train.

There are many ways to search for high-speed train information: Recommended apps include 12306 (the official app of China Railways), Amap (Gaode Map), and Baidu Maps.

Payments

In China, mobile payments are widely supported wherever there is internet coverage, making it extremely convenient. Even an 80-year-old grandmother pushing a cart selling her handmade crafts will accept payments via WeChat or Alipay QR codes. If you can’t find a bank branch or ATM for cash withdrawals with your bank card, don’t worry. As long as you have a balance in your WeChat or Alipay account, you can easily exchange money at hotel front desks, restaurants, or supermarkets, and most are happy to assist you.
